In 1979 bracht Queen eerbetoon aan Elvis uit in de vorm van Crazy Little Thing Called Love. Geheel in Rockabilly stijl, een ongecompliceerd liedje over de emotionele rollercoaster die de liefde teweeg kan brengen:

In 1981 schreven de mannen van Queen samen met David Bowie Under Pressure in maar één avond! Het liedje geeft een kritische blik op de maatschappij van 1981 en de stress die de moderne tijd met zich meebracht.

De economische recessie van begin jaren tachtig, de Koude Oorlog en de grote werkloosheid die de vooruitzichten (voor jongeren) niet bepaald rooskleurig maakten, zetten de maatschappij en gemoedstoestand van de bevolking erg onder druk.

Anno 2017 lijkt de maatschappij er niet bepaald rustiger op te zijn geworden en dit liedje past eigenlijk nog steeds! Een universeel thema en relevant in alle tijden!
3. Somebody To Love – Queen (Day at the Races, 1976)
In Somebody To Love gaan de mannen (of misschien wel alleen Freddie Mercury – de schrijver van dit liedje) op zoek naar liefde en dat is alles behalve gemakkelijk..
Each morning I get up I die a little
Can barely stand on my feet
Take a look in the mirror and cry
Lord what you’re doing to me
I have spent all my years in believing you
But I just can’t get no relief, Lord
Somebody (somebody)
Ooh somebody (somebody)
Can anybody find me

In deze tijd kwam Freddie (nog) niet openlijk uit voor het feit dat hij bi was, maar aangezien homo- en biseksualiteit nog een groot taboe waren (homoseksualiteit werd pas in 1967 gelegaliseerd in Engeland!), kan ik me voorstellen dat dit beklemmend voor hem moet zijn geweest.* Als de volgende lyrics er inderdaad een verwijzing naar zijn, is het nog vrij subtiel:
Got no feel, I got no rhythm
I just keep losing my beat (just keep losing and losing)
I’m okay, I’m alright (he’s alright, he’s alright)
I ain’t gonna face no defeat (yeah, yeah)

Acht jaar later wordt hetzelfde thema besproken, maar op een heel andere manier. Zie nummer 2: I Want To Break Free!
2. I Want To Break Free – Queen (The Works, 1984)
Toen I Want To Break Free uitkwam, was het nog be-hoor-lijk spraakmakend. Eén van de redenen hiervoor was de music video. De vier bandleden zijn hierin te zien als drag queens, waarbij we Freddie Mercury volgen die ontsnapt uit de dagelijkse sleur van het huisvrouwen-bestaan.
De clip was een parodie op de Britse soap Coronation Street, maar dit werd niet overal gewaardeerd. Zo werd het parodiale karakter in de Verenigde Staten niet begrepen en het werd zelfs geïnterpreteerd als promotie voor travestie! Het lijkt nu onvoorstelbaar, maar het was toen voldoende reden voor MTV om het liedje van de zender te bannen.
Maar ook de lyrics waren taboedoorbrekend en hebben grote betekenis gehad voor de gay-community. Grappig genoeg is het helemaal niet geschreven is met de intentie om een statement te maken! De (heteroseksuele) John Deacon schreef de tekst en in een interview zegt Freddie over de betekenis:
“It has got nothing to do with the gay people at all. It is basically about everybody. It’s just somebody who has a very tough life and he just wants to break free from whatever problems he’s got.”
Toch wordt de betekenis anders geïnterpreteerd. Voor velen gaat het verder dan het enkel losbreken uit een slechte relatie of dagelijkse sleur.

De verschijning van de heren in de video als drags zou wijzen op een coming out. Als dat inderdaad zo is, dan krijgt de volgende passage ineens ook een andere lading:
I’ve fallen in love

And this time I know it’s for real
I’ve fallen in love, yeah
God knows, God knows I’ve fallen in love
In 1986 was er nog veel onbegrip voor homoseksualiteit, mensen werden nog regelmatig gedwongen in de kast te blijven. Met de (ongetwijfeld) enorme struggle die daarbij kwam kijken in het achterhoofd, begrijp ik dat dit veel leden van de gay community aansprak:
But life still goes on

Living without you by my side
I don’t want to live alone, hey
God knows, got to make it on my own

Homo-discriminatie is (helaas) nog steeds niet verdwenen, maar het is ook lang niet meer zo’n groot taboe als in 1986. Deze wereldhit heeft hier vast een steentje aan bijgedragen! 💪
1. Bohemian Rhapsody – Queen (Bohemian Rhapsody, 1975)
Als Bohemian Rhapsody al twee decennia bijna elk jaar op de eerste plaats staat in de Top 2000 kunnen wij bij Nolala natuurlijk niet achterblijven 😉
Bohemian Rhapsody is niet alleen ongeëvenaard qua sound (er zijn weinig liedjes die naast ballad-elementen, ook opera én rock bevatten en nog steeds goed klinken!), maar ook qua betekenis. Waar staan de lyrics voor? Freddie Mercury wilde er tijdens zijn leven niet meer over loslaten dan dat het liedje over ‘relaties’ ging.
Roger Taylor zegt in ‘The Story Of Bohemian Rhapsody’-documentaire dat ze “fairly self-explanatory with just a bit of nonsense in the middle” zijn. Let’s see;
Mama, just killed a man
Put a gun against his head, pulled my trigger, now he’s dead
Mama, life had just begun
But now I’ve gone and thrown it all away
Als je deze lyrics heel letterlijk interpreteert, pleegt de hoofdpersoon een moord en moet hij ‘weggaan’, vluchten waarschijnlijk.
Too late, my time has come
Sends shivers down my spine, body’s aching all the time
Goodbye, everybody, I’ve got to go
Gotta leave you all behind and face the truth
En dan die ‘nonsense in the middle’:
I see a little silhouetto of a man
Scaramouche, Scaramouche, will you do the Fandango?
Volgens één van de vele theorieën is Bohemian Rhapsody geïnspireerd op het 18e eeuwse boek Faust van de Duitse literaire schrijver Goethe waarin de hoofdpersoon een pact sluit met de duivel.
‘Scaramouche’ is een karakter in het Italiaanse commedia dell’arte (improvisatietheater) en staat voor een valse clown. Scaramouche zou in dit geval dan ook verwijzen naar de duivel. De Fandango is een uit Spanje afkomstige 18e eeuwse dans.

(Galileo.) Galileo. (Galileo.) Galileo. Galileo figaro magnifico
De donder en bliksem creëren een angstaanjagend sfeertje. ‘Galileo’ verwijst naar Galileo Galilei, een briljante astronoom die door de Katholieke kerk werd vervolgd voor zijn revolutionaire wetenschappelijke conclusies. Dit komt niet alleen overeen met de rol van Faust in de historische legende, maar ook met de strijd voor de acceptatie van homoseksualiteit door Mercury.
Dat ‘Figaro magnifico’ verwijst naar Mozarts klassieke opera The Marriage of Figaro lijkt niet alleen een logische verklaring vanwege de opera-achtige sound van dit couplet, maar ook door het feit dat Mercury zijn leven lang groot operaliefhebber was.
En dan volgt er een soort conversatie:

‘Monstrosity’ zou weer naar duivel kunnen verwijzen.

‘Bismillah’ betekent ‘In naam van Allah’ in het Arabisch.

‘Mamma mia’ betekent letterlijk ‘mijn moeder’ in het Italiaans en volgens sommigen is het een verwijzing naar Mary Austin, de vrouw met wie Freddie Mercury jarenlang samen was voordat hij uit de kast kwam.
Beelzebub has a devil put aside for me, for me, for me!
Beelzebub is een Hebreeuws woord dat naar Satan zou verwijzen.
Hiermee wordt het derde couplet afgesloten en gaan we over naar het vierde couplet, waarin de (interne) strijd van de hoofdpersoon plaats maakt voor boosheid:

En het liedje sluit af met acceptatie (of is het ontkenning?):

Je zou een boek kunnen schrijven over alle mogelijke interpretaties van de lyrics van Bohemian Rhapsody en misschien heeft het ook wel z’n charme dat niet alles letterlijk te verklaren lijkt te zijn.
Waar het ook vandaan mag komen of wat het ook mag betekenen, Bohemian Rhapsody heeft met de tijd in ieder geval niets van zijn waardering verloren. Zie hier hoe het zelfs. wanneer het enkel als wachtmuziekje gedraaid wordt, 65.000 mensen in vervoering kan brengen:
