Heb jij een droom voor de toekomst? Iets dat je koste wat het kost wilt bereiken? Een doel waarvoor je bergen zou verzetten? Dan zou ik High Hopes van Panic! At The Disco maar eens luisteren. Bij mij staat het al een tijdje op repeat en wel hierom..
Waar gaat High Hopes over?
In een interview met Billboard zegt frontman Brendon Urie over de inspiratie voor dit liedje:
“As a kid I thought I would never make it. I only had dreams and fantasies of being a rock star, making cardboard cut-outs of a guitar, standing in front of my mirror just dreaming of the day.”
Gelukkig heeft hij (als de lyrics van dit liedje helemaal autobiografisch zijn) een wijze moeder. Zij geeft hem het volgende advies:

Wanneer je droom nog geen realiteit is geworden, kan het intimiderend zijn om naar het succes van anderen te kijken. ‘Burn your biographies’ en ‘rewrite your history’ interpreteer ik als dat je je niet moet laten afschrikken door hetgeen anderen bereikt hebben. Volg je eigen pad en dan komt het goed!
Een tijdje geleden realiseerde ik me dat succesverhalen eigenlijk altijd verteld worden vanaf het moment dat de wind mee zat. Als iemand eenmaal succes heeft, lijkt het allemaal erg vanzelfsprekend, maar vaak zijn er jaren ploeteren aan voorafgegaan.
Wist je bijvoorbeeld dat Katy Perry 8 jaar lang keihard heeft gebuffeld voordat ze haar eerste hit scoorde? Daar hoor je toch nooit iemand over?
Het is helemaal ok als succes niet overnight komt. Zo weet ook mama Urie:

Wanneer je ergens voor gaat, krijg je vroeg of laat tegenslagen. Niets van aantrekken, gewoon doorzetten dus!
En.. dream big – ook als je doel nog (heel) ver van je realiteit af staat:

High Hopes – Panic! At The Disco
Bij Panic! kwam het succes ook niet zonder slag of stoot en dat heeft een voordeel. Brendon zegt in het eerdergenoemde interview:
“I failed and tried again, but I felt much more happy once I accomplished it — the reward is much greater once you challenge yourself thoroughly.”
Droom vs. Realiteit
Nu Brendon zijn kinderdroom leeft, rijst de vraag; is de realiteit wat hij ervan verwacht had?
“(…) absolutely my reality beats my fantasy. Which is so crazy to say.”
Hij besluit hier niet alleen van te genieten, hij geeft het door. Eerder dit jaar startte hij de High Hopes Foundation, een non-profit organisatie waarmee hij geld inzamelt om de positie van mensen die gediscrimineerd worden vanwege hun geslacht, afkomst, geloofsovertuiging, seksuele geaardheid of genderidentiteit te verbeteren.
In het interview geeft hij aan dat dit ook de reden is dat zijn huidige succes hem zo gelukkig maakt. Ook geeft hij een tip aan iedereen met een droom:
“I’m so happy to be here, because it’s another opportunity to share that with somebody else who has a passion — maybe not in music, but in something else. I stuck with [music] because it’s my biggest passion. Stick to yours. Do what makes you happy. It’s much easier than you all think.”
Mijn high hopes
Ik ben Nolala gestart vanuit de missie om mensen die niet naar songteksten luisteren zover te krijgen om dat wel te gaan doen. Ik geloof namelijk dat je de allerbeste muziekbeleving hebt wanneer je een liedje luistert dat zowel qua sound als qua inhoud perfect bij jou past. Toen ik zelf ervoer hoe ontzettend groot deze meerwaarde is, wilde ik dat delen.
Onderzoek wijst namelijk uit dat 2/3 van de muziekliefhebbers geen idee heeft waar songteksten over gaan. Dat betekent dat ik het luistergedrag van 2/3 van de mensen wil veranderen! Speaking of ‘shooting for the stars’.
Er zijn momenten waarop ik me afvraag waarom ik ook alweer besloten heb om deze bizar ambitieuze missie na te streven. Ik heb een goedbetaalde baan en daarmee een stabiel leven vaarwelgezegd om al mijn tijd, energie en spaargeld te investeren in iets waarvan ik werkelijk geen idee heb of het ooit gaat lukken.
Natuurlijk brengt het me hartstikke veel en vind ik het fantastisch dat ik dit avontuur kan aangaan, soms moet ik mezelf er even aan herinneren dat Beyoncé, Oprah Winfrey en Steve Jobs ook maar gewoon mensen zijn die hun missies stap voor stap hebben volbracht. Ook bij hen is het ooit begonnen met high hopes. Ik zet deze banger van Panic! nog een keertje op!
