I Don’t Care, de nieuwste catchy knaller van Ed Sheeran en Justin Bieber, lijkt op het eerste gezicht misschien een simpel liefdesliedje, maar wist je dat het ook een behoorlijk kwetsbaar onderwerp bespreekt?

Het liedje lijkt geïnspireerd te zijn op behoorlijk bange momenten van de mannen. Maar gelukkig staan ze er niet alleen voor!

Ed’s helse vlucht

Ed Sheeran vertelt in een interview met The Guardian over een angstaanjagende ervaring die behoorlijk veel heeft losgemaakt.

Een paar jaar geleden zat hij op een easyJet-vlucht van Benidorm naar Londen. Het was 2.00u ’s nachts, hij was in zijn eentje, zonder vrienden of security, en was omringd door dronken Benidorm-gangers. Omdat het zo warm was, kon hij zichzelf ook niet bedekken met een hoodie. Hij beschrijft de ervaring als:

“Horrendous. The worst experience of my life. Like so bad, that I started getting panic attacks. I’ve never had anxiety in my life, it’s been something I read about in interviews with other artists and thought, ‘Thank f*ck I don’t have that.’”

Hij heeft er nu nog last van:

“I just don’t like groups of people that I don’t know any more, I can’t do crowds any more. I can go to a pub, but only if it’s a pub that no one would go to. So me and Cherry [zijn highschool sweetheart met wie hij in december in het geheim getrouwd zou zijn, red.] go to a pub near where I live for Sunday lunch, we get a little corner table out of the way, and that’s fine. I can do that, but standing in a pub, no, I couldn’t do that.”

Het is niet officieel door de singer-songwriter bevestigd dat I Don’t Care autobiografisch is maar als je de songtekst leest en het verhaal over de angstaanjagende vlucht kent, zou het zomaar kunnen:

Justins struggles

Ook voor Justin Bieber komt het sterrendom met een prijs. Toen hij nog maar 13 jaar oud was, had hij zijn eerste succes en beleefde zijn puberteit – en daarmee de periode die ontzettend belangrijk is voor je persoonlijke ontwikkeling – in de spotlights. Hij kreeg te maken met depressie, verslaving en zoals in dit recente Instagram-bericht te lezen is, angst:

Gelukkig lijkt zijn kersverse vrouw Hailey Bieber hem hier goed bij te helpen. In februari vertelt het koppel openlijk over hun relatie een interview in Vogue. Zij wordt beschreven als zelfverzekerd, stabiel en sterk, Justin zou zachtaardig, gevoelig en echt een gevoelsmens zijn. Hij zegt:

“I’m the emotionally unstable one. I struggle with finding peace. I just feel like I care so much and I want things to be so good and I want people to like me. Hailey’s very logical and structured, which I need.

I’ve always wanted security—with my dad being gone sometimes when I was a kid, with being on the road. With the lifestyle I live, everything is so uncertain. I need one thing that’s certain. And that is my baby boo.”
