Stoer, brutally honest en met veel humor: dat is Pink. Al 19 jaar staat ze aan de muzikale top en omdat ze deze zomer naar Nederland en België komt voor (naar ’t schijnt) 3 weergaloze shows, leek het mij hoog tijd om eens te onderzoeken: waar gaat de muziek van Pink eigenlijk over?

Wie denkt dat haar catchy liedjes geen inhoud hebben, heeft het mis. Pink komt op voor underdogs, bespreekt de ups en downs van haar liefdesleven en voelt Amerikaanse presidenten aan de tand. En er zijn weinig artiesten die zo open, uitgesproken en puur in zijn in hun songteksten. En haar directheid maakt het moeilijk om je er niet door aangesproken te voelen..

Pink wie..?

Alecia Beth Moore, ofwel Pink (of P!nk), werd geboren in 1979 in Doylestown, Pennsylvania. Haar ouders scheidden als ze 9 jaar oud is en van haar 12e tot haar 15e verliest ze zichzelf in het uitgaansleven. Ze handelt in onder meer ecstasy en crystal meth. In 1995 neemt ze een overdosis, waarna ze de drugs nooit meer aanraakt.

Niet lang daarna gaat ze deel uitmaken van girl group Choice, maar dat wordt geen succes. Dan start ze een solocarrière. Haar eerste album Can’t Take Me Home wordt een redelijk succes, maar de R&B-sound die haar label haar heeft opgelegd, past niet bij haar.

Ze benadert haar jeugdheldin Linda Perry, frontvrouw van 4 Non Blondes, om haar te helpen. Samen vinden ze de pop-rock sound die Pink zo wereldberoemd maakt.

In de loop der jaren scoort ze tientallen wereldhits en verkoopt ze miljoenen albums. Ook schrijft ze muziek voor films als The Greatest Showman en Suffrogettes en speelt ze zelf in films als Thanks For Sharing en Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle.

Daarnaast is haar prijzenkast goed gevuld met onder andere 3 Grammy’s, 7 MTV Video Music Awards en 5 American Music Awards.

Impact

Pink’s persoonlijke- en eerlijke lyrics zijn een belangrijke reden waarom ze zo gewaardeerd wordt. De enorme impact die ze kunnen hebben, ontdekte ze een aantal jaren geleden toen een 13-jarig meisje naar haar toe kwam na een tv-optreden. Ze gaf haar een behoorlijk aangrijpende brief. In een interview met Entertainment Weekly vertelt de zangeres:

“It was literally, ‘My mom just died, my grandfather was raping her, and now he’s raping me. And I want to kill myself, but I don’t because of your music.’ I’m sitting there bawling my eyes out, trying to call Child Services and figure out where this girl is and can I take her with me.”

Maar het meisje is al weg en ze zou haar nooit meer zien. Dit soort emotioneel contact met fans heeft Pink vaker. In een interview met The Guardian vertelt ze hierover:

“I started to realise that when I am the most uncomfortable and the most vulnerable and saying the most honest, shameful shit, that’s what’s getting to somebody else. And I’m basically having therapy and somebody else is getting something from it.”

Ze haalt het beste in haar fans naar boven:

“It’s not just like, ‘Oh my God, Pink, I love your hair!’ And it’s not even ‘I want to be like you.’ It’s ‘I like you because you make me want to be like me’.”

Het was lastig om een keuze te maken uit Pink’s enorme hit-repertoire, maar ik heb 5 (of eigenlijk 6) liedjes gekozen die (wat mij betreft) representatief zijn voor thema’s die ze belangrijk vindt en de unieke manier waarop ze deze onderwerpen bespreekt. 5. Family Portrait (M!ssundaztood, 2001)

Op nummer 5 het hartverscheurend eerlijke Family Portrait. Het liedje is geïnspireerd op een gedichtje dat Pink schreef toen ze 9 was, vlak nadat haar vader het gezin had verlaten. Ze beschrijft de impact die dat op haar had:

I hear glasses breaking as I sit up in my bed
I told dad you didn’t mean those nasty things you said

You fight about money, ’bout me and my brother

It ain’t easy growing up in World War III
Never knowing what love could be, you’ll see
I don’t want love to destroy me like it has done my family

Family Portrait – Pink

In een interview met Telegraph, zegt ze:

“That was my life. I was a daddy’s girl and I was devastated when he left because my mom and I never really got along.”

Maar tegelijkertijd zegt ze:

“God, what a relief. You spend the first nine years of your life afraid of what’s going to happen in your house and then you just have quiet. I flinch now when people fight. I can’t handle it.”

Wat haar familie ervan vond dat ze de vuile was buiten hing in deze lyrics? Haar moeder was er op z’n zachtst gezegd niet blij mee en returned the favor in een interview met de National Enquirer. Inmiddels hebben de dames het toch weer bijgelegd en schijnen ze erom te kunnen lachen.

4. Stupid Girls (I’m Not Dead, 2006)

Zelfliefde en innerlijke kracht zijn belangrijke thema’s voor Pink. In 2017 wist ze veel mensen te inspireren toen ze de MTV’s Vanguard Award in ontvangst nam op de VMA’s. In haar dankwoord (dat later viral ging) droeg ze de Award op aan haar dochtertje Willow.

Ze vertelde dat haar meisje niet lang daarvoor tegen haar had gezegd ‘I’m the ugliest girl I know. I look like a boy with long hair’. Pink was ontdaan over het zelfbeeld van haar 6 (!) jarige dochter en besloot een PowerPoint-presentatie te maken over androgyne popsterren.

“We don’t change,” besloot ze haar dankwoord “We help other people to change, so they can see more kinds of beauty.”

Dit is inderdaad al jaren terug te lezen in haar lyrics. Waar Raise Your Glass en F*ckin’ Perfect vrij letterlijke en bijna traditionele powersongs zijn, pakt Pink het in Stupid Girls anders aan. Hierin heeft ze kritiek op vrouwen die zichzelf dom of overdreven sexy voordoen voor aandacht:

Een minder traditionele manier om een bemoedigende boodschap uit te dragen, maar minstens zo inspirerend!

3. Beautiful Trauma (Beautiful Trauma, 2017)

Waar veel artiesten hun liefdesleven liever voor zich houden, is Pink erg open in haar songteksten en in interviews. In 2002 kreeg ze een relatie met motorcrosser Carey Hart. Ze gingen even uit elkaar, maar trouwden uiteindelijk en kregen samen twee kinderen.

Hun relationele ups en downs zijn duidelijk de inspiratie geweest voor veel van Pink’s liedjes; haar twijfels bespreekt ze in Blow Me (One Last Kiss), ze overtuigt (zichzelf) dat het goed met haar gaat in So What (en weet Carey zelfs voor de videoclip te strikken – ondanks dat ze in deze tijd uit elkaar zijn!) en verklaart haar liefde aan hem op geheel eigen wijze in True Love (‘I really hate you so much, I think it must be true love’).

Hun relatie lijkt het best te beschrijven als ‘turbulent’ en Pink lijkt dit samen te vatten in Beautiful Trauma.

I wasn’t that friendly
My love, my drug, we’re fucked up, oh

De eerste twee zinnen zijn geïnspireerd op een voorval tijdens Thanksgiving een aantal jaar geleden. Bij Jimmy Fellon vertelt Pink dat ze de slaapkamer van haar schoonouders in brand zette omdat ze haar sigaret niet goed had gedoofd. Vervolgens kreeg ze zo’n ruzie met Carey, dat ze de banden van zijn auto doorsneed. Ja, echt!

Dan vergelijkt ze hun liefde met drugs; het geeft haar enorme highs maar ook lows. En het is ook nog eens verslavend:

In een interview met The Guardian zegt ze:

“There are moments where I look at [Carey Hart] and he is the most thoughtful, logical, constant … he’s like a rock. He’s a good man. He’s a good dad. He’s just the kind of dad I thought he’d be and then some.

And then I’ll look at him and go: I’ve never liked you. There’s nothing I like about you. We have nothing in common. I don’t like any of the shit you like. I don’t ever wanna see you again.

Then two weeks later I’m like, things are going so good, you guys. Then you’ll go through times when you haven’t had sex in a year. Is this bed death? Is this the end of it? Do I want him? Does he want me? Monogamy is work! But you do the work and it’s good again.”

Hoe stoer dat ze hier zo brutally honest over is!

2. Dear Mr. President (I’m Not Dead, 2006) / What About Us (Beautiful Trauma, 2017)

Als je weet hoe uitgesproken Pink is over haar familie en liefdesleven, is het niet verwonderlijk dat ze ook geen blad voor de mond neemt als het om politiek gaat. In een interview met NPR legt ze uit waar dat vandaan komt:

“I grew up with a Vietnam vet dad and a Vietnam vet stepmom and a nurse for a mom, people that have always been of service. My dad’s nickname is Mr. Cause. I grew up listening to rock and roll and, you know, protest music. And I feel like with songs like ‘What About Us’ and ‘Dear Mr. President’ and even ‘Stupid Girls’, I’m doing my part a little bit.

It’s very clear who I am and what I believe in. I’ve been marching and protesting. And, yes, I could do so much more. Honestly, I could do so much more.”

Dear Mr. President, dat ze uitbracht met Indigo Girls in 2006, is een open brief aan toenmalig president George W. Bush. In de messcherpe songtekst stelt ze hem een aantal (gewetens)vragen, waarmee ze strijdt tegen onder andere zijn beleid rondom de oorlog in Irak, zijn streven om het homohuwelijk te verbieden en zijn beleid rondom dakloosheid.

I’d like to ask you some questions if we can speak honestly
What do you feel when you see all the homeless on the street?
Who do you pray for at night before you go to sleep?

Dear Mr. President – Pink feat. Indigo Girls

Toen Donald Trump gekozen werd tot president en een fan vroeg of ze haar liedje geen update kon geven, antwoordde ze in een tweet:

“There aren’t words for this shameful person”

Ze heeft nooit officieel bevestigd dat What About Us over Trump gaat, maar het lijkt erop dat haar frustratie over de machtigste man van Amerika de inspiratie is geweest voor dit liedje. In de lyrics schreeuwt ze om aandacht voor ‘ons’;

We are searchlights, we can see in the dark
We are rockets, pointed up at the stars
We are billions of beautiful hearts 

Maar dan richt ze zich tot iemand in het bijzonder:

And you sold us down the river too far

‘Selling (one) down the river’ betekent dat je iemand verraadt voor je eigen gewin. In het refrein stelt ze een aantal (retorische) vragen:

En in de bridge stelt ze zich strijdlustig op:

Met ruim 262 miljoen views van de videoclip op YouTube, is haar schreeuw om aandacht wel gehoord. Maar of het ook is doorgedrongen tot in het Witte Huis..?

1. Courage (Hurts 2B Human, 2019)

De nummer 1 in dit lijstje komt van haar meest recente album Hurts 2B Human. Ze schreef het liedje Courage samen met Sia en ik heb voor dit minder bekende liedje gekozen als uitsmijter, omdat het gaat over de grote gemene deler van Pink’s songteksten; moed.

Het vergt moed om een boekje open te doen over je pijnlijke verleden, om de president van Amerika aan te spreken, om eerlijk te zijn over de roerige tijden in je relatie en om voor outcasts op te komen. In Courage kun je lezen dat dat voor haar ook weleens kwetsbaar aanvoelt en juist dat maakt het, wat mij betreft, zo krachtig;

In de Pink Beautiful Trauma Documentary praat ze over het thema kwetsbaarheid:

“I think vulnerability is important to me because it’s so difficult, because it’s so uncomfortable. I think the human experience shouldn’t be covered up, I think it should be lived out loud.”

Wat daar wel bij nodig is, is compassie:

“I think empathy is a human necessity. I allow myself and others around me, I can hold space for flaws, and faults and pain and true experience. I see in other people the truth that’s happening and I want them to feel comfortable being that. I want to be like ‘Look, I’m doing it too. I feel like an idiot, I’m scared half of the time.”
