Dead people returning as ghosts, demons roaming around, horror stories… It’s almost Halloween! This is not exactly my favourite day of the year, being a bit of a scaredy-cat, but for Nolala I’ve mustered up the courage to explore the 5 hits with the most terrifying lyrics. It’s time to face your fears!

5. Somebody’s Watching Me – Rockwell

A classic song about a classic fear; the sense that someone might be watching you… That’s pretty scary and for Rockwell it means that he’s too afraid to even wash his hair…

When I come home at night
I bang the door real tight
People call me on the phone
I’m trying to avoid
Or can the people on TV see me
Or am I just paranoid?
When I’m in the shower
I’m afraid to wash my hair
Cause I might open my eyes and find someone standing there!
People say I’m crazy, just a little touch
But maybe showers remind me of Psycho too much
That’s why…

I always feel like somebody’s watchin’ me
And I have no privacy
I always feel like somebody’s watchin’ me
Who’s playing tricks on me?
Somebody’s Watching Me – Rockwell

This song describes the exact reason why I never watch scary movies.

4. The Monster – Eminem feat. Rihanna

I’m not entirely sure whether you would usually run into them on Halloween, but they’re frightening nonetheless; monsters.

If you can’t beat them, join them! Rihanna must have thought…

I’m friends with the monster that’s under my bed
Get along with the voices inside of my head
You trying to save me, stop holding your breath
And you think I’m crazy, yeah, you think I’m crazy

When you examine the lyrics a little more closely, you will discover that the monster Rihanna refers to is actually Eminem’s alter ego; Slim Shady. He’s got a price to pay for his fame and success; there’s not a lot of privacy left and he struggles to deal with this reputation and this extreme level of success:

I wanted the fame, but not the cover of Newsweek
Oh well, guess beggars can’t be choosey
Wanted to receive attention for my music
Wanted to be left alone, public excuse me
Been wanting my cake, I need it too, wanting it both ways
Fame made me a balloon cause my ego inflated
When I blew seep it was confusing
‘Cause all I wanted to do is be the Bruce Lee of loose leaf
Abused ink, used it as a tool when I blew steam
Ooh, hit the lottery, oh wee
With what I gave up to get was bittersweet
It was like winning a huge meet
Ironic ‘cause I think I’m getting so huge I need a shrink
I’m beginning to lose sleep, one sheep, two sheep
The Monster – Eminem feat. Rihanna

Indeed, better to become friends with this monster!

3. Monster – Lady Gaga

Another song about monsters! Usually they’re underneath the bed, but they could also be in it! At least, that was the case for Lady Gaga…

I wanna just dance but he took me home instead
Uh oh, there was a monster in my bed
We French kissed on a subway train
He tore my clothes right off
He ate my heart then he ate my brain
Ohh ohh uoooh oh (I love that girl)
(Wanna talk to her, she’s hot as hell)
He ate my heart
He a-a-ate my heart (I love that girl)

He ate my heart, he ate my heart
Instead he’s a monster in my bed
Monster – Lady Gaga

In this song, Mother Monster attempts to warn her followers for men that use them for sex.

2. Demons – Imagine Dragons

No inner monsters this time, but inner demons. Imagine Dragons sing about the personal struggle you can experience with insecurities.

When the days are cold and the cards all fold
And the saints we see are all made of gold
When your dreams all fail and the ones we hail
Are the worst of all and the blood’s run stale

I want to hide the truth, I want to shelter you
But with the beast inside, there’s nowhere we can hide
No matter what we breed, we still are made of greed
This is my kingdom come, this is my kingdom come
Demons – Imagine Dragons

I always thought that ‘This is my kingdom come’ referred to something positive, but I recently discovered that it is an expression that describes how the end of the world is near. If this insecurity is close, whatever you have achieved will probably never be enough. Relatable?

1. Thriller – Michael Jackson

The ultimate monster hit 😉for Halloween is without a doubt Thriller by Michael Jackson. I shiver all over just by reading the lyrics, imagine experiencing this….

It’s close to midnight
Something evil’s lurkin’in the dark
Under the moonlight
You see a sight that almost stops your heart
You try to scream

But terror takes the sound before you make it
You start to freeze
As horror looks you right between the eyes
You’re paralyzed
‘Cause this is thriller
Thriller at night
And no one’s gonna save you
From the beast about to strike
Thriller – Michael Jackson

It might be a good idea to stock up on some candy in case the kids from the neighborhood start trick or treating. I could probably handle a neighborhood kid’s trick, but the scariness in these lyrics are another story. If I were to believe these hits, monsters and demons had better stay away! Happy Halloween!
